ADDITIONAL FACTS

Williams initially refused to leave Massachusetts after his banishment and was on the verge of being arrested and deported back to England when he finally fled to Rhode Island. John Winthrop (1588–1649), one of his theological adversaries, reputedly tipped off Williams about his impending arrest.

A statue of Williams was erected in the Rotunda of the US Capitol in 1872. In 1997, as part of an effort to acknowledge more women and minorities in the Rotunda, the statue was relocated.

Starting in 1631, Williams struggled to learn the languages of the local Wampanoag and Narragansett tribes. He eventually wrote several books on native dialects.
